Cat Trapping
Support TAILS’ mission to reduce overpopulation and help cats in need.
Cat trapping is one of the most hands-on and impactful ways you can help community cats. It’s part of our rescue and TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) efforts, and it plays a direct role in preventing future litters, getting cats medical care, and improving their lives.
We’re always looking for volunteers who are detail-oriented, calm under pressure, and willing to get a little dirty to help save lives.
What It Involves
1. Setting Humane Traps
You’ll be trained to use humane box traps to safely catch cats. This often means going to outdoor locations where cats are living — parking lots, backyards, barns, or feeding stations — and setting baited traps in quiet spots.
2. Waiting and Monitoring
Trapping takes time and patience. You might be monitoring the trap from your car or checking on it periodically. Once a cat is trapped, you'll cover the trap with a towel to help keep them calm and then transport them to a holding location or a vet appointment.
3. Transporting Cats
Volunteers may help drive cats in traps to and from their vet appointments or recovery space. You'll need a vehicle that can safely carry one or more traps (and tolerate a little noise or mess).
4. Weather, Smells & Scratches
Let’s be real — it’s not always glamorous. You might be outside in the early morning or evening, in less-than-pristine locations. Traps can smell like fishy bait, and some cats will panic once caught (they may hiss or thrash). Gloves and a sense of humor help.
What You DON’T Have to Do
You won’t be asked to handle cats directly (no scruffing or grabbing).
You won’t be asked to trap alone until you feel ready.
You don’t need to be available every day — we’ll work with your schedule.
