Bottle Feeding Kittens

Be a lifeline for the tiniest, most vulnerable cats we rescue.

When orphaned kittens come to TAILS without a mom, they need round-the-clock care to survive — and that’s where bottle feeders come in. Bottle-feeding kittens is one of the most rewarding volunteer roles we offer, but it’s also one of the most demanding.

These kittens literally depend on you for every meal, every potty break, and every cuddle. If you’re up for the challenge, we’ll give you all the training and support you need.

What It Involves

1. Feeding Every Few Hours
Newborn kittens (0–4 weeks) need to be bottle-fed every 2–4 hours, including overnight. As they grow, feedings become less frequent. You’ll be shown how to prepare formula, hold the kitten correctly, and make sure they’re eating safely.

2. Keeping Them Warm and Clean
Young kittens can’t regulate their body temperature. You’ll need to keep them warm with heating pads or warm blankets and monitor their comfort. They also need to be stimulated to go to the bathroom after each feeding - we’ll show you how.

3. Weighing and Monitoring
Kittens need to gain weight daily to thrive. You’ll track their weight, alert us if there are concerns, and possibly bring them to vet appointments or foster check-ins.

The Realities

  • Overnight Feedings: Yes, it’s like having a newborn baby. You will have to wake up for nighttime feeding.

  • Messes: Formula spills, poop accidents, loud meowing — it happens.

  • Heartbreak: Despite best efforts, some fragile kittens don’t make it. It’s emotionally hard, but you’re giving them the best chance possible.

The Rewards

  • Snuggles: Few things compare to a tiny, warm kitten sleeping in your hands.

  • Milestones: Watching them open their eyes, gain strength, and eventually find homes is pure magic.

  • Impact: Bottle feeders truly save lives — without this care, these kittens wouldn’t survive.
